ABB InSite - Smart Energy Monitoring

Smarter Energy Monitoring with ABB InSite
Residential and commercial clients are looking for energy transparency and lower running costs in a bid to build and maintain more sustainable buildings. The ABB InSite Circuit Monitoring System (CMS) delivers on both.
Why Energy Monitoring Matters
Legislation, building certifications (like BREEAM and NABERS), and rising energy costs are driving demand for smarter energy monitoring and management. HVAC and lighting combined can account for over 50% of a building’s energy use – but without detailed monitoring, it’s impossible to see where over consumption and energy wastage is happening.
The ABB InSite circuit monitoring system lets you track usage down to individual circuits, spot high energy consumers and anomalies, and make informed changes that can deliver savings of 20–25%, with the potential of much more.

ABB InSite Top Features & Benefits
- Universal, third-party-friendly sensors – Works with ABB products or existing breakers from other brands, perfect for retrofits.
- No license or subscription fees – All data is available locally via the built-in web server.
- Flexible communication – Modbus RTU/TCP, M-Bus, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
- Scalable hardware – SCU200 control unit for residential/small commercial and expandable setups; handles up to 160 sensors per bus.
- Future-proof expansion modules – Some of the optional expansion modules include the option to connect to wireless M-Bus, auxiliary signalling, and 4G connectivity for isolated sites. The expansion modules also make it easy to get data from electric vehicle (EV) chargers, photovoltaic (PV) systems, utility meters, and more.
The ability to add expansion modules makes the InSite system ultra-flexible and scalable, giving integrators the ability to create a bespoke solution with ease.
Our Favourite ABB InSite Feature
The ability to accurately monitor energy consumption to the level that the InSite solution provides is extremely helpful. But where this solution becomes really powerful is the ability to connect with a control system and be able to offer intelligent energy management.
With the level of information that is monitored with the InSite solution, both energy and financial savings become tangible and extremely efficient to access thanks to the flexible connectivity to a system like KNX or any other compatible BMS.
How ABB InSite Works
Compact CMS sensors clip onto breakers or cables to measure AC or DC circuits. These connect via a flat ribbon cable to the SCU control unit, which logs and displays data on a built-in dashboard. The web interface is easy to access from a laptop, tablet, or dedicated touchscreen no cloud connection required.
Dashboards can be customised for facility teams, building owners, or clients, with views showing:
- Circuit-by-circuit usage
- Cost analysis (with tariff inputs)
- Historical trends and CSV exports
- Integration of gas and water meters

Real World Results with ABB InSite
Nestled less than 50 metres from King Charles III’s Edinburgh residence, the 500-year-old Abbey Strand has been revitalised into nine luxury boutique apartments by developer Chris Stewart Group (CSG), all while preserving its storied architectural charm.
Central to this transformation is ABB’s InSite energy management system and i-bus ® KNX building-automation platform, delivering intuitive, remote monitoring and control over lighting, temperature, energy usage and fault reporting.
This retrofit solution boosts comfort for residents and brings transparency and energy-efficiency benefits to CSG’s finance and operations teams, supporting long-term sustainability goals.
