4 Ways KNX Supports Wellbeing in Buildings

With more people than ever focused on optimising wellbeing at home and in the workplace, we look at how a KNX installation can put wellbeing first, automatically.

When we talk about KNX, it's often under the lens of energy management and maintenance, or being able to control all the necessary systems centrally and more simply. But one angle that is not often the centre of attention is the use of KNX for wellbeing, and how its technical strengths as a control protocol actually make it the perfect system for helping us to look after ourselves better, without having to lift a finger!

Let's look at the 4 main ways that KNX can help us improve our wellbeing:

1. Lighting Control

With KNX, you can control the lighting in any environment in a way that supports our circadian rhythm. For example, you can program lights to gradually brighten in the morning to help with waking up and gradually dim in the evening to help with winding down and preparing for sleep. This can help regulate our sleep-wake cycle, which is an important factor in overall wellbeing.

2. Temperature Control

By using KNX you can also help regulate the temperature in an indoor environment, which is important for maintaining comfort and health. You can program heating and cooling systems to automatically adjust based on factors such as the time of day and occupancy, as well as current climate conditions including temperature and humidity.

Feeling comfortable is not only important for overall wellbeing and happiness, but it is also closely linked to productivity.

3. Air Quality Monitoring

Poor indoor air quality can have a negative impact on health and wellbeing, both at home and in the workplace. With KNX, you can install sensors that monitor factors such as CO2 levels, humidity, and temperature, and in using these measurements automatically adjust ventilation systems to maintain healthy air quality.

We've all felt that afternoon slump, or experienced sensitivities or allergy flair-ups when air quality dips below the optimum, and KNX can help keep us alert and feeling fresh.

4. Security and Safety

Feeling safe and secure, especially in your home, is essential for wellbeing. KNX can help with monitoring and controlling security systems including alarms, cameras, door and entry management, but where KNX really comes into its own is the ability to create a secure ecosystem rather than relying on one product to do the job. What do we mean by that exactly? With KNX it's possible to:

  • Close the blinds automatically at dusk, even when no one is home to press a button
  • Illuminating your path through a building or external path as you walk during darner hours
  • Receive notifications alerts about activity when you're out of the home
  • Attract help with all the house lights flashing if an alarm is triggered

With A KNX system, it is possible to build layers of security that are woven into the way the environment is lived in, which is much more intelligent than any one product. This level of customised security gives occupants peace of mind, helping them feel more secure.
